Tell us about your business…

I'm the co-owner of Hayes Common, an award-winning neighbourhood eatery in Hamilton that we've operated for the past 10 years. Alongside that, I'm developing Common Compost, a circular regenerative business helping hospitality businesses divert food waste from landfill, and building a consultancy focused on sustainable business systems, operations, and leadership. Together, these businesses reflect nearly 20 years of hospitality experience and a passion for creating positive environmental and community impact.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I've always loved creating places where people feel connected. Hospitality allowed me to bring people together over great food and service, but over time, I became increasingly interested in solving some of the industry's bigger challenges. That curiosity has grown into exploring business opportunities driven by purpose and impact on broader-reaching communities.

Why did you join Soda’s Growth Lab?

I joined Growth Lab because I was ready to build Common Compost and my consultancy alongside Hayes Common, and I wanted to ensure I was building them with purpose and on the right foundations. I was looking for strategic thinking, accountability, and the opportunity to learn from others within its supportive, woman-led environment.

What was your biggest breakthrough during the programme?

The biggest breakthrough was gaining clarity. Growth Lab helped me understand how Hayes Common, Common Compost, and my consultancy all complement one another rather than compete for my attention. It also introduced me to different business structures, including social enterprise, which challenged me to think differently about how I could create impact while building a sustainable business.

What changes have you made to your business since completing the programme?

Since completing Growth Lab, I am preparing to launch a funded pilot of Common Compost. I have refined the business model, strengthened our sustainability strategy, and begun creating more space for me to work on the next stage of the business. I'm making decisions with much more confidence because they are grounded in a clear, long-term vision.

What did you enjoy most about Soda’s Growth Lab?

One of the biggest highlights was the calibre of the programme itself. The facilitators created a space that encouraged honest conversations and challenged our thinking, while the guest speakers generously shared the realities of building their own businesses—the wins, the mistakes, and everything in between. Learning alongside a diverse group of business owners also meant there was always a fresh perspective in the room.

What's one thing you learned that you wish you'd known years ago?

Before worrying about what business you're building, spend time understanding why you're building it. Growth Lab challenged us to define our purpose first, and that became the foundation for every decision that followed. Having that clarity makes it much easier to stay focused when both opportunities and distractions come along.

What's next for your business?

The next step is growing Common Compost beyond the pilot while continuing to develop consultancy work that helps hospitality businesses become more sustainable, efficient, and resilient. At the same time, we're building the leadership structure within Hayes Common so the business can continue to thrive while I focus on innovation and industry-wide impact.

Would you recommend Growth Lab to other business owners? Why?

Absolutely. Whether you're starting a new venture or growing an established business, Growth Lab gives you the space to step back from the day-to-day and think strategically about where you're heading. It combines practical tools, experienced mentors, inspiring guest speakers, and a supportive network of business owners. I left with far more clarity and confidence than when I started.
